The 9A1 engine found on 981 the Cayman/Boxster and 991.1 911’s comes from the factory with aluminum bolts holding together the cam bolt actuator. In our many years racing, repairing, and servicing Porsche’s we have noticed that the aluminum bolts can shear damage the engine, requiring an engine-out rebuild and upwards of $15,000 in repairs. While Porsche is aware of this issue and has issued warranties for these damages, the safer option is to take the preventative maintenance and replace the weak aluminum bolts with our machined titanium alternative.
A common maintenance is to replace these bolts with an off-the-shelf steel equivalent. While they provide more than enough strength to keep the engine running, they weigh 3.5 times more than the OEM bolts and create an increased rotational inertia for the engine to overcome. For the optimized balance of engine reliability and performance, the SP Titanium Cam Bolts are the clear winner at a minimized 1.5 times weight increase while improving strength by over 3 times that of aluminum.
