SP Motorsports Battles Through Adversity to Deliver Strong Results at Road America
Round 4 of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Championship brought the series to the legendary Road America, a circuit renowned for its high speeds, heavy braking zones, and ever-changing weather. Coming into the weekend, SP Motorsports arrived as prepared as ever after completing four productive days of testing earlier in the month. The additional track time paid dividends, with every driver demonstrating improved pace and confidence throughout the weekend. Behind the scenes, the crew delivered exceptional preparation, providing both the No. 27 and No. 74 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2s with a strong foundation heading into competition.

THE CHALLENGE
While confidence was high, the weekend was not without its challenges. The No. 27 car continued to battle a persistent braking issue that required the crew to flush both the braking and ABS systems after every on-track session. Although these efforts temporarily improved performance, the issue consistently returned approximately ten minutes into each stint, forcing the drivers and engineers to adapt their approach throughout the weekend. Adding another layer of complexity, engineers also had to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions with rain forecasted ahead of Race 2.
QUALIFYING STATEMENT
Friday morning qualifying highlighted the determination of the entire team. Jaden Conwright opened Qualifying 1 in the No. 27, fighting through the braking limitations in an incredibly competitive Pro field where the top six cars were separated by less than one second. Despite the handicap, Jaden delivered an impressive P6 qualifying result. Over in the No. 74, Paul Whiting produced his strongest qualifying performance of the season, initially securing P2 before being promoted to Pole Position after the No. 12 car was disqualified. It marked the first pole position of the season for both Paul and the No. 74 team. In Qualifying 2, Joaquin Morillo continued to battle the braking inconsistency, resulting in a P10 starting position for Race 2, while Daniel Morillo navigated changing track conditions and heavy traffic to qualify P8 in the AM class.
RACE 1: THE CHARGE
Race 1 showcased the determination and race pace of both SP Motorsports entries. Jaden Conwright wasted little time moving forward in the No. 27, delivering a composed and aggressive opening stint that saw him climb all the way to the overall race lead before the mandatory pit stop. Following another flawless driver change by the crew, Joaquin Morillo took over for the second half of the race. Although the ongoing braking issues made consistency difficult, Joaquin fought hard to bring the No. 27 home in P7 in the Pro class, salvaging another valuable championship result despite the mechanical limitations.

On the AM side, Paul Whiting lined up from Pole Position in the No. 74, the team’s best starting position of the season. Confidence was high heading into the green flag, knowing a podium finish was within reach. A difficult start and fiercely contested opening laps shuffled Paul backward, but he remained composed before handing the car over to Daniel Morillo.

Daniel drove a clean, consistent second stint, allowing the duo to secure a respectable P6 finish in the AM class. With the race running entirely under green flag conditions, opportunities to recover positions were limited, making every tenth of a second hard-earned. Despite the challenges, both crews executed another mistake-free race and continued to demonstrate the consistency that has become a hallmark of the team this season.
RACE 2: WEATHER THE STORM
Saturday’s Race 2 presented an entirely different challenge. Heavy overnight rain dramatically altered the circuit, forcing engineers to prepare for multiple race scenarios. Thanks to extensive wet-weather testing completed earlier in the month, both the drivers and engineering staff entered the race with confidence despite the uncertainty. By race time, however, the track had dried sufficiently for Hankook slick tires, creating a constantly evolving grip level throughout the afternoon.

Starting from P10 in the Pro class, Joaquin Morillo delivered a disciplined opening stint in the No. 27, avoiding trouble while steadily gaining positions before handing the car over to Jaden Conwright. Still managing the recurring brake issues, Jaden extracted everything the car had to offer during the closing stint, climbing to P6 in class. Despite having the pace to challenge further, the braking limitations ultimately prevented a charge toward the top five, making another sixth-place finish a testament to the determination of both driver and team.

The No. 74 endured a far more eventful race. Daniel Morillo opened the race aggressively, working his way forward before making contact with the No. 37 LB Cup entry while battling for position. Although Daniel was able to continue without significant damage, the incident resulted in a drive-through penalty that reshuffled the team’s race strategy.

Shortly afterward, a major incident entering the famous Kink brought out a Full Course Yellow just before the pit window opened. SP Motorsports immediately capitalized on the timing, bringing both the No. 27 and No. 74 into pit lane for perfectly executed driver changes. Paul Whiting and Jaden Conwright rejoined under caution, allowing both teams to maximize their strategy. As the race resumed, both drivers demonstrated excellent pace while carefully managing cars carrying race damage, Car 74 ended the race in P6. In a race that saw ten competitors fail to reach the checkered flag, simply finishing was an accomplishment in itself. The reliability and preparation of both SP Motorsports Lamborghinis stood out, reflecting countless hours of work by the crew before the weekend even began.
