The 9A1 engine found on 718, 981, and 991 comes from the factory with aluminum bolts holding together the cam bolt actuator. In our many years racing, repairing, and servicing Porsche’s we have noticed that the aluminum bolts can shear damage the engine, requiring an engine-out rebuild and upwards of $15,000 in repairs.
While Porsche is aware of this issue and has issued warranties for these damages, the safer option is to take the preventative maintenance and replace the weak aluminum bolts with our machined titanium alternative. A common maintenance is to replace these bolts with an off-the-shelf steel equivalent. While they provide more than enough strength to keep the engine running, the added weight introduces additional rotational mass for the engine to overcome.
